The town was originally named for John André, an Englishman who had been captured and taken captive in India during the French and Indian War (1754-63). Other early businesses include A & P Grocery (1827), J W Smith’s Pub (1829), and Brown’s Inn (now called Shepherdstown Inn). In 1830, Confederate General Robert Ewell skirmished with Union forces near what is now called Battery Park before retreating back across the river to Washington Court House where he later surrendered his army to Ulysses S Grant. By 1870, most of Charleston had been destroyed by fire except for a few blocks around Market Street which were rebuilt as part of streetcar suburbs that developed along that axis during that era. The Reconstruction period saw many changes take place in Charleston including African American migration from rural areas into city neighborhoods; however much remains unchanged from antebellum times such as white supremacy and Jim Crow segregationism which persisted until well into the 1960s%. Many famous people grew up or completed their education here including Fannie Lou Hamer, Booker T Washington Sr., Dr Martin Luther King Jr., Willie Dixon and many more.
