The current name took effect upon rebranding under then-city manager Donny Pugh following annexation into neighboring Portsmouth as that community began significant growth beginning in earnest following Hurricane Andrew which hit Charleston late summer 2001 followed closely by Hurricane Floyd shortly thereafter creating havoc along I-81 corridor particularly affecting western Hanover County some weeks later priorities shifted suddenly ashore onto peninsula impacted communities primarily along Reedy Creek waterfront region immediately adjacent Bear Mountain National Forest extending inland some 15 miles paralleling US 11W spine northeastward thence southeastward past Peninsula village developmentally culminating at Petersburg Naval Base annexing Bear Mountain Forest interior Lands thereby completing comprehensive central government branding program announced earlier that year effective September 30th2002 less than one week prior to formal announcement formal application process final approval given November 3rd2002 & effective November 5th2002 resulting in renamed City Council - Donny Pugh Mayor

The area now comprising Huntington was first settled by Native Americans such as the Shawnees and Quakers during the Piedmont region's large-scale cultural exchange with European settlers beginning in the late 17th century. By 1800, most of what would become monongalia county had been taken up by settlements of Scots-Irish immigrants who began arriving in significant numbers following British military campaigns against Native Americansbeginning in 1763. By 1805, about 60% of monongalia's population were Irishmen while only 10% were Virginians; this difference reflects continued English dominance over much of what would become west Virginia until after independence (see History of west Virginia). In 1814, when Wheeling and other towns were moved from Allegheny to Monongalia County, Huntington became part of Westmoreland County under then Governor James Kintyre Johnston; but because there was no U.S.-level government established within Westmoreland until 1830, Johnston’s successor George Fenton created five districts which made up present-day Monongalia and Wyoming counties: Armstrong District (including present day Pocahontas), Big Sandy District (including present day Mingo Junction), McDowell District (present day Sweetwater Creek), Putnam District (present day Omawatomie) and Winchester District (including present day Greenupville). As one result of these changesWestmoreland County lost much of its rural character which had contributed so significantly to its early growth; however many residents did not move away because they found new opportunities for advancement or prosperity within newly organizedaware communities such as those emerging around Wheeling/Charleston/Parkersburg etc.; instead they maintained their homes throughout various reorganizations including through incorporations which took place between 1830 and 1860 despite little change in their land or lifestyle In 1898, Huntington became the first town in Monongsalia to be chartered as an incorporated village when it merged with nearby Pinehurst Village; both villages had previously been separate charter municipalities but combined into one due to fears that either would eventually secede from the state if left alone . However unlike Pinehurst Village which quickly achieved high levels of success including becoming home to several colleges and universities before disbanding approximately 25 years later due largely to economic reasonsMonongahela Valley Community College remains a community college located just outside Ofallon where it began operations on December 1st 1959
