According to the 2000 census there are 516 households out of which 36% have children under 18 living with them, 59% are married couples living together, 9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25% are non-families. Grant moved against Confederate forces near the town during the Battle of Antietam Creek. The Union victory ended the war in Virginia and created an era of peace for St. Albans and neighboring communities. In 1865, St. Albans became part of Kentucky when that state seceded from the United States following the American Civil War. The city continued to grow as a result of its close relationship with Kentucky and its reliance on agriculture for its economy. In 1937, St. Albans was designated a National Historic Landmark under President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal program for cities with historical significance in both eastern Kentucky and western Pennsylvania$.
