The name “Beaver Dam” was given to it by General Anthony Wayne during the American Revolution. The first permanent settlers in the area were farmers who arrived around 1836. They named their new community Beaver Dam after the rapids that flowed through its vicinity. In 1854, a post office was established at Beaver Dam and it remained in operation until 1959. During that time, it served as the seat of government for Door County. In 1907, a school was built and it remains in use today. The population of Beaver Dam peaked at 22 people in 1920 but has since declined by about 50%. However, its economy has been diverse and its citizens have played an important role in local politics for many years. In 1916, when La Crosse County was created, Beaverdam became one of its six villages. The economy of Beaverdam has been based largely on agriculture since its founding and production continues today with some light manufacturing along with a few small businesses that provide services such as catering and construction. The name comes from Beaver Creek, which empties into the Menomonee River near the town. The first settler in what is now Beaver Dam was Gideon Brown who arrived in 1837. He and his family were among the earliest to live on the site of present day Beaver Dam when it was still part of Canada. The first post office in Beaver Dam was established in 1846, but no resident ever lived there until 1872 when John Haddock moved to Beaver Dam from Green Bay with his family. By 1860, there were 12 residents living in Beaverdam. In 1862, Congress passed an act authorizing a dam on the Menomonee River for irrigation purposes only and not for commerce or military purposes as had been proposed by some settlers. President Abraham Lincoln signed this bill into law and construction began immediately on what would become known as "the Dike". The townspeople quickly started to build their own homes and businesses around what would become their main water supply; they also founded a school district that included many of today's towns within Polk County. Over time, more people came to live in Beaverdam and it became one of Wisconsin's most heavily populated cities; its population reached 9,000 by 1910). Much progress has been made since then - including much new housing development along Interstate 94 - but much work still needs to be done if Beaverdam is to maintain its current level of prosperity and growth over time
