Brookfield is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. The population was 28,405 at the 2010 census. Brookfield is the largest town in Racine County and one of the fastest-growing cities in Wisconsin. With its convenient location near Chicago and Milwaukee, Brookfield has become an important transportation center for both communities. The first people to inhabit what is now Brookfield were Sauk Indians who lived there from around 1000 AD until about 1800 AD. Other tribes who inhabited this area at that time include: Menomonee, Potawatomi, Fox, Ojibway, and Malecite peoples. In 1834, John Fetterman bought two tracts of land from the Sauk Indians for $1/acre (about $3/km2). He named his new land "Fetterman's Town". In 1836 he brought out a millinery store called "Fetterman's Mill" which became one of the most successful businesses in town. By 1840 Fetterman had built a gristmill and four other mills within five miles (8 km) of his original storehouse. In 1846 David Hackney founded what became known as Hackney’s Factory which manufactured flourmills for local farmers to sell back to their customers. This process continued until 1893 when production shifted to larger facilities near Milwaukee due to advances in technology. At that point many residents began referring to themselves as “Hackneys” because they owned or operated such major businesses in town - including post office, theater, library and more! Brookfield grew rapidly during World War II with its participation in various patriotic activities such as supplying food stamps to troops located overseas; manufacturing munitions; and providing housing for American servicemen stationed abroad during wartime period! Brookfield is a town in Green Bay County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 14,827 at the 2010 census. Brookfield was founded in 1868 by John Lutz and others as a farmstead on the east side of the River Eastman. The city of Brookfield was incorporated in 1922. The current town center was built in 1968. The first settler to arrive in what is now Brookfield were John Lutz and his family who arrived from Germany in 1868. They began farming land that they purchased from the nearby village of Easton. In 1870, they erected a log cabin on the site where their present-day home stands. By 1871, they had also acquired some land along the riverside for cultivation and livestock grazing purposes. A sawmill was established here soon after and local industry began to take shape with taverns, stores, and even a blacksmithing shop opening up across the river near downtown Green Bay. In 1916, when it became apparent that World War I would result in an increase in traffic through Green Bay due to munitions production across Canada, Mayor George Wesselsort decided to build one of the first expressways ever built out of Milwaukee County - County Road #1 (now Interstate 94). This early transportation artery linked Milwaukee with Chicago via Prairie du Chien just north of town before continuing south into Madison Township on Illinois Avenue until reaching its terminus at State Highway #2 (now Interstate 55) just west of downtown Green Bay
Brookfield was founded in 1854 by James Fenton and John Nicholson. The town was named for a stream that ran through it, Brookfield. The first post office was established in 1855. In 1865, the first railroad reached Brookfield from Milwaukee. In 1871, the town became a city.
