Brookfield is a town located in suburban Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. The population was 41,731 at the 2000 census. The town center is home to the Brookfield State University campus and the nearby Village of Brookfield. It is also surrounded by farmland and forests. The Town of Brookfield was organized on December 2, 1846, from parts of the Town of West Bend and portions of the Town of Northbrook. At its incorporation, it had a population of just under one thousand people. Brookfield's first mayor was Amos Tilton. In 1857, two townsmen were elected to represent Brookfield in the Wisconsin State Assembly: John Pappas and Daniel Hines. Brookfield remained an unincorporated community until it became organized as a town on December 2, 1846 by act of the Wisconsin Legislature. The boundaries for what became Brookfield were drawn from land that had been donated by James Gifford and others to form what would become Milwaukee County (in what is now southeastern Milwaukee). The original name for Brookfield was "West Bend." A change in name occurred due to competition from other towns in Jackson County with similar names - such as South Bend – which established themselves after becoming incorporated places. On November 15th, 1854 – more than one year before Brookfeldt came into being – a meeting was held at which select men from five villages within Jackson County met to establish their own village system called "Townshendianism" because some members felt they needed more control over their lives than did those living in larger communities like Chicago or Cincinnati where there were no limits on how much property any individual could possess or build upon without consent from all residents who lived near him/her/itself (a practice known as zoning). Ultimately this plan fell through because many villagers didn't feel comfortable about having another village sitting next door trying to dictate their every move; they wanted their own village system where they could run things their way without interference from outsiders! This led to a new name for town – "Brookfeldt". In 1865 when Brooks Falls Dam was built adjacent to present day Broome Lake - making it possible for water access between Milwaukee County and Racine County – part of what would later become Arlington Heights grew up around this dam site including today's neighborhoods of Arlington Heights East and West and current side streets Wauwatosa Ave., Washburn Ave., Niles Rd., Ewing Ave., Lincoln Way among others including Old Sheffield Cemetery which still stands today along Sheffield Dr./Washburn Ave.-Old Sheffield Rd.-Lincoln Way

Brookfield is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Racine County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 96,585. In 1854, it became a part of the newly created Milwaukee–Racine County Metropolitan Statistical Area; together, they formed what is now called "the Urban Core." The first community center was built in 1905 on land annexed from Brookfield Township to form what would become downtown Brookfield. When that building burned down in 1951, Riverwest Federal Credit Union moved into it and became one of downtown's earliest tenants; Riverwest remains an anchor tenant today. In 1956, Racine County established a tax increment financing program for downtown redevelopment which financed more than $200 million worth of projects including new businesses and residences over 15 years. By 2006, whenanked annexations had increasedDowntown totals by nearly 50%, making it one of America’s most continuing “downtowns” despite suburban sprawl westward across I-94! With many institutions (including 4 elementary schools) located within blocks or close at hand (accessibility via public transportation), there are no limits to what can be done here! Today's downtown features 6 blockslong pedestrian mall with cafes/bars/restaurants spanning 3 levels with skylights giving an incredible view into Downtown Chicago during night hours - something not possible anywhere else outside Chicagoland! Dozens if not hundreds more businesses have opened since then - all paying their own property taxes AND generating job & income growth!! A great example can be seen right next door at Waukesha Valley United Methodist Church - started as just 2 feet wide storefront until they renovated 3 floors ago – now home to dozens if not hundreds more services & products offered inside & out!! In addition to being home to thousands upon thousands jobsites scattered throughout numerous industries across 5Brds sq ft+ surface area (with some occupying entire buildings!), this vibrant core has also been designated as a “ Beta CSA Zone” - meaning NOTHING CAN IMPACT THE BUSINESSES LOCATED HERE!!! This sets Brookfield apart from other areas where single-use zoning ordinances dictate how much space certain types of businesses may occupy without regard for anything BUT economic development! What could possibly go wrong???
Brookfield was first settled in 1836 by a group of Mormons. The town grew rapidly, and by 1870 it had over 1,000 residents. In 1876, the town voted to become a city, and growth slowed until the early 1900s when Brookfield experienced an influx of new immigrants from Europe and Asia. The economy diversified during the postwar years with heavy industry becoming dominant, but has since decelerated. Today, Brookfield is home to a mix of businesses and services with a focus on education and research.
