Fort Atkinson is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the south shore of Lake Michigan. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. The name "Fort Atkinson" comes from French Canadian refugees who were brought over to create this post in 1795 as part of General Anthony Wayne's campaign against the British in that year. The fort was originally called Fort Michilimackinac, and then Fort Dearborn after General Dearborn's victory at the Battle of Fort Dearborn (1792). It was renamed Fort Atkinson in 1810 following General John Cranch's expedition into Canada to retake lost territory following an Indian uprising there. The village was platted around 1825 and became a town on November 3, 1830. In 1855, it became a city under the terms of the Wisconsin Act 15 which granted voting rights to all citizens over 21 years old and increased its size from 2,500 to 10,000 residents within six years. Fort Atkinson is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located in the western portion of the Iron County seat of Racine. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. Fort Atkinson is one of six towns in Racine County and it is part of the Milwaukee-Waukesha Metropolitan Area. The first settler in what would become Fort Atkinson was John Laughlin, who arrived in 1836 and founded a log cabin on an elevation known as "Laughlin's Hill". Laughlin's cabin served as a trading post for several years before becoming self-sufficient. By 1840, there were about twenty settlers living at Fort Atkinson and by 1842, there were over fifty colonists residing here. On December 20, 1845, President James K. Polk signed a proclamation creating Racine County from land west of Milwaukee which had been ceded to Wisconsin by Illinois during the Mexican War; this area included present-day Fort Atkinson Township and portions of outlying villages such as Whitefish Point and La Crosse Ridge. The new county was named for General Anthony Wayne (1767-1848), commander of American forces during the War for Independence and later governor general of Canada under George Washington Carleton (1787-1859). The first courthouse at Fort Atkinson was built in 1846 but it never functioned because no law enforcement officers could be found to garrison it due to lack of funds. A new courthouse was built on State Street in 1850 which served as the county seat until1872 when Racine became its own county seat(). In 1856, fortifications were erected along both sides of River Raisin to protect against attack by Native Americans; these fortifications remain extant today and are used for public functions such as fire suppression operations.. In 1865, Green Bay Railroad reached Ft ATKINSON through Racine; this made Ft ATKINSON an important military depot for rail transportation purposes.. In 1870, Ft ATKINSON also became home to what would be known as "the first water tower" within WI when Guyson's Dam opened downstream from town.. By 1899, Ft ATKINSON had grown sufficiently that five churches – Episcopalian (1869), Methodist (1875), Lutheran (1901), Roman Catholic (1905) and Presbyterian (1910) – were established within its boundaries.. After World War I ended with America's entry into World War II - which caused large numbers OF displaced persons - many families decided to move into Ft ATKINSON from other parts of WI followingArmistice Day 1945 .. By 1951 enrollment at Waukesha High School had reached 1,500 students while community services offered by organizations such as Habitat For Humanity Incorporated contributed significantly to growth throughout that decade .. During 1957-'61 Brownsburg Community College opened up shop here providing education/training opportunities beyond those available online or through correspondence courses .. Finally after more than forty years growth - bringing current enrollment levels to nearly 4 thousand students - Waukesha High School moved into its current building on Prairie Avenue just outside downtown across from City Hall late last year .. The rapid increase in student enrollment has led some local boosters to call for construction plans for yet another high school campus adjacent to downtown . However with projected budget cuts upcoming it remains unclear if any major development will occur anytime soon
Fort Atkinson was founded in 1792 by Captain George Armstrong and Lt. Colonel James K. Polk. The fort served as a military post until 1818, when it was replaced by the current fortification.
