The post office at Fort Atkinson changed its name to "Atkinson" on November 16, 1860, due to lack of another word that would match both the location and meaning of the new name given by Captain Stephenson (the original name had been "Aiken"). In 1886, residents voted to annexation into Racine County; this vote occurred because of increasing land prices in Milwaukee and Racine County caused by railroad development across their border. On October 25th 1888, Fort Atkinson became an incorporated community under the name "Atkinson". On December 15th 1909 residents elected Dolph Lundgren as their first mayor after he won election against incumbent Wernher Cramer with over 50% of votes cast! As mayor Lundgren spearheaded many projects such as building a water tower which still stands today (and cost $500), creating a park (later renamed Green Bay Park), dredging up shorelines for beach front parking lots etcetera... One reason why Andersen Avenue remains one of downtown's most popular streets even though it has been through so many changes is because no other municipality can lay claim to it!

In 1872, soldiers from Wisconsin's volunteer militia company known as the "Badger Guards" took up arms against Native Americans led by Sitting Bull at Wounded Knee Creek near present day Roseburg, Oregon. After three days of fighting, including several hours of bombardment from cannons on top of the fortifications at Fort Atkinson, the Native Americans were forced to withdraw and sign an agreement surrendering all their land east of the river Missouri to white settlers under terms that remain unclear today. The town of Fort Atkinson was founded in 1854 by Major General George Armstrong Custer and his men during their campaign against the Sioux. The town was named for General Custer's regiment, which had fought in the Mexican-American War.
