Monroe, Wisconsin is a small town located in the central part of the state of Wisconsin. The population was 5,554 at the 2000 census. Monroe is a predominantly white community with a primarily German-American population. Monroe is located on U.S. Highway 82 and has a post office called Monroe which opened in 1879. It was named for General James Wilkinson Monroe who served as Minister to Russia from 1801 to 1805 and as Secretary of War from 1825 to 1830 under President James K. Polk. The first store in Monroe was built by Michael Schleicher in 1875 and it operated until 1912 when it closed because of prohibition laws which were then repealed. The first school in Monroe was built in1876 by Phebe Lunsford and it operated until 1928 when it closed because of lack of funding. A second school was built in 1928 by Mrs. Weinstock and it operated until 1951 when it also closed due to lack of funding or too many students. The current Webster High Schoolopened its doors on September 9th, 1976 after being designed by architect Lloyd Wright with input from local citizens who came together to form what became known as the "Lackawanna County Civic Committee." Inaugurated by Mayor John Ziegler, the high school offers classes through daycare, kindergarten through 12th grade; an art department; three music departments; two boys' hockey teams (1982-1984), one girls' hockey team (1986-1989), four boys' lacrosse teams (1990-1992), four girls' lacrosse teams (1994-1996) along with several sports programs including wrestling, basketball, volleyball/diving, football/soccer, soccer/baseball and track & field
