In 1870, John Wirth founded a flour mill on nearby Soo Creek; this mill also became one of the most important businesses in town and helped to spur economic growth during its early years. The first school here was opened for grades K-8 by local parents on November 1, 1872; it continued to serve these students until 1954 when it moved into a new building across from present day Town Hall. In 1899, John Crouch developed an oil refinery nearpresent-daytown limits; this refinery later became known as Marathon Oil Corporation and still operates today as one of Wisconsin's largest employers ashoreadvisor/energy consultant services company with over 100 employees statewide
Neenah, Wisconsin was founded in 1847 by the freeze of a river during winter. The town's name is derived from the word "nenah," meaning "water" and "haha," meaning "place." In 1872, Neenah became one of ten towns in Racine County. The county was organized on March 12, 1867. On November 15, 1888, Neenah became the capital of Racine County.
