The area now includes portions of Onalaska and Mukwonago counties, as well as parts of Green Bay and Milwaukee County. The first European to see Onalaska was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1628 when he journeyed upriver from Winnipeg to find a route to Lake Superior. He named it after his patron saint, Onofrio della Rovere, who had been martyred in Venice two years earlier. In 1836, settlers began arriving in what would become Onalaska and Kettleburn with horses and wagons drawn by oxen or dogsleds because there was no fur trade available in that area at that time. They built log cabins which remain standing today. The first school opened in 1837 and continued operation until 1954 when it burned down due to an electrical fire
