By 1900, however, most residents were German Americans who continued to rely heavily on local goods and services for their livelihoods despite difficult times. In 1914, when World War I began, many people left their homes for war effort because there was no other way to make a living. Most businesses closed early due to wartime rationing and lack of business opportunity; however, some managed to stay open through the conflict including Harry's Hamburgers which continued serving customers even after hostilities ended in 1918. During World War II much of what remained from pre-war businesses came back into use but production slowed down due to shortages caused by the war itself as well as competition from American companies such as Ford Motors and Chevrolet cars coming into prominence postwar America. In 1945 local farmers donated over one million bushels (240 metric tons) of corn worth $2 million towards creating what would become known as "Onalaska Corn Belt". After years of growth thanks largely to post-WAR investments such as public works projects like Interstate 94 (now M-96) and redevelopment efforts like Wayland Mills Mall adjacent to downtown In 2006 Onalaska had an estimated population total of 1,993 with 585 housing units
