Port Washington is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, on the Fox River between Green Bay and Milwaukee. The population was 7,868 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit what is now Port Washington were French explorers in 1674, when they explored and surveyed the river for a fur trading post. In 1836, John Cavanaugh built a log cabin on a bluff overlooking the Fox River in what is now Port Washington. By 1840, he had developed his land into what became Port Washington Village. In 1854, John Foust opened an agricultural store near present-day downtown Port Washington Village and began selling flour from his mill which he operated from above his store until 1865. He also erected a cotton gin and other tools used by farmers during this time period at modern day corner of First Street and Union Avenue in what is now downtown Port Washington Village; these structures are still standing today as part of the village's core infrastructure. In 1886, The Chicago & Northwestern Railway established its line through town (now part of Milwaukee) and Cutrera Bros., Incorporated began shipping goods across the Fox River from their shipyard located just west of downtown Milwaukee to their original warehouse/mills located east of downtown Milwaukee; although Limited Express service continued upriver until 1922 when it was discontinued due to high water levels along both banks of the river; Cutrera Bros.'s warehouses remain extant as well as several smaller buildings on Union Avenue west of First Street that served as company offices during this time period including one that still stands today as One57 West Wisconsin Drive - home to local businesses such as Murphy's Law Offices since 1987). A sawmill was built by George Cutrera Sr., son George Jr., Harry Runyon & John Jurgensen about 1915 on Southeastern Boulevard in what is now northeast corner of Present Day Mainstreet & Waukesha Avenue near where Aldermanic District 5 office building currently stands; this sawmill remains extant today with several contributing buildings still standing within yard boundaries . A cheese factory was started by Anna Ritchie around 1925 on Southeastern Boulevard near current day intersection of Kedzie Ave & Wright St.; after World War II this factory closed but remained standing until being torn down circa 1965 by then city administrator Gaynor Wheeler who replaced it with her own house within blocks boundaries . A small grocery store existed on Waukesha Ave NE before being converted into an apartment complex circa 1957-1968 also known locally as "The Ghetto". This building no longer exists however portions thereof remain attached to property adjacent to current day intersection Fourth Street NW & Phillips Road which forms border between alleyways separating two Blocks square footage approximately 2 acres ) An elementary school named "Port Washington Elementary" operated from 1949-1957 inside present day former Allis Chalmers School Building located adjacent to current day brick wall bordering alleyway separating two Blocks square footage approximately 1 acre ); A post office called "PortWashington Post Office" opened in 1907 inside present day former Ladd Paper Company Building located adjacent to current day brick wall bordering alleyway separating two Blocks square footage approximately ½ acre); Another small grocery store called "The Grocery Store" operated from 1975-1979 inside present day former Sears department store building located adjacent to busy commercial district immediately southwest side bounded by Third Street NW, Commercial Dr., Nitschke Way NE
