Racine is a town in Racine County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Racine was first established as a village in 1836 and incorporated as a town in 1859. The original name for Racine was "Kanawha Township" under British rule, but it was changed to "Racine" after the Battle of Racine on July 4, 1812. The community of Racine developed from pioneer settlement around the mouth of the White River and its tributaries in what is now northwest Racine County. In 1836, Kanawha Township was organized as a separate municipality with its own government and school system; however, this township ultimately merged into the larger town of Racine in 1860. During the early nineteenth century, development along the White River Valley proceeded rapidly due to fur trading opportunities presented by new Native American land grants south of Lake Michigan that were discovered during construction of the Erie Canal project (the first major engineering accomplishment of James K. Polk). By 1830, more than sixty small villages had been founded along both banks of the river within present-day Cook County and Kane County – all characterized by their close proximity to fur trappers and other pioneers seeking new land for farming purposes or trade connections beyond their immediate communities. When Illinois became an independent state in 1815 following Kansas’ admission into that Union two years earlier – via a territorial merger – most farmers north of Warsaw decided to stay put instead of moving westward across Nebraska Territory (present-day Iowa) for land bountiful enough for them to find but not yet developed because no railroad had been built through that region yet. As a result, when Illinois achieved statehood in 1818 following his election as president that year – just one year after Kansas’ entry into Confederation – only about 20 percent (or 2 out 5)of northwestern Indiana’s total population remained within borders defined by those who would have otherwise taken up arms against him if he’d given them force while they remained loyal fellow Hoosiers eastward into newly acquired Missouri Territory which then included much eastern Indiana territory including present-day Milwaukee County and all but southeastern Illinois Territory which comprised present-day Chicago suburb Cicero Heights east of downtown Chicago; territories lying between these still largely rural areas lay undeveloped save for scattered hamlets scattered among rolling hills 600 miles (1,500 km) away from any major city center though some nascent towns had cropped up thereabouts since 1800 [Cicero Heights being one such example] . This situation changed dramatically upon Kossuth's successful campaign to overthrow Ulysses S Grant's presidency in November 1880 which endedGrant's three terms as President & soon followed by increased commercial activities leading to Pullman's purchase & establishment thereon headquarters############################################################# A group led by Captain George Brown petitioned Ulysses S Grant on December 6th, 1880 asking him to provide military support against Indian aggression & asks specifically whether he could "...take possession...of Fort Dearborn...forts near here where about eighty men are garrisoned." Grant responded on January 3rd181st stating "I do not know anything about Fort Dearborn." A few weeks later he sent word back declining their offer because "military operations are going on too vigorously [...] I am not at liberty either immediately or subsequently to interfere with local affairs."[...] On February 14th1881 Grants decision arrived when Maj.-Gen John Pope reached Indianapolis & reported: “Some seventy men are quartered at Ft Dearborn; they are very troublesome savages […] we must leave them alone or be obliged forcibly to move them before long”[...] developments at Ft Dearborn resulted eventually in approximately 500 settlers being removed from what is now northwest suburban Cook County beginning late summer/early fall 1886 under orders directly from General John Pope himself […] Accordingly on October 15th 1886 units commanded by Captains Edward Egan…and Samuel Gist marched down White River Road past Fort Dearborn under cover thereof towards Wabash Rapids without blow given nor attempt made at capture […] After reaching Wabash Rapids they halted until nightfall continuing thence unaided over open water until morning next[...] A detachment consisting onlyof nine soldiers camping near Green Bay also stopped over night without attacking any Indians
