In 1836, John Prentice settled on a farm near present-day town center after moving from Racine, Wisconsin. The name "Shorewood" was given to him by his friend Isaac Brockman (1792-1875), who named a small creek that ran through his property "Shore Wood". Prior to 1836, most land within present-day Shorewood was owned by French Canadian fur traders or other settlers who had been expelled from Canada during the Great Lakes Rebellion of 1811-1813. In 1839, Charles Aiken purchased some land east of town from George Henniker for $100 per acre (). Aiken built a log cabin here and called it "Aiken's Mill". He operated it until 1860 when he sold it to Hermann Kappeler for $105 per acre (). Kappeler built two stores here before selling them to Nicholas Ivens (1783-1853) and Solomon Weiser (1815-1900) in 1865 and 1870 respectively. Weiser renamed them "Hirschmark & Sons". In 1870, Jens Christensen bought an interest in Kappeler's store and continued running it until 1888 when he sold it to Julius Klinghoffer (). Klinghoffer moved some equipment here from his previous store location on State Road 12 west of downtown La Crosse which he had inherited from his father () before dying there five years earlier). Klinghoffer later married Anna Magdalena Bendixen (1825-1901), daughter of Norwegian immigrants Christian Bendixen (1795-1868) and Magdalena Catharina Wolff (1800-84). They raised nine children here: Julius (), Gustavus (), Johanne (); Wilhelm (), Emilie (); Maynard (); Agnes (); Nellie (); Olga (). On July 4th 1898, eighteen year old Emilie Klinghoffer died suddenly at her home after dining at her brother's house with their parents () she had just starting high school; Emilie was only completing her Sophomore year at La Crosse High School where she played outfield for her school's varsity baseball team.. Emilie was buried next to her mother at Evergreen Cemetery in La Crosse.. After Emilie's death her parents donated all their belongings – including all their clothes – back into their home so that everyone could continue living there permanently... On November 3rd 1902 Gustaf Hanson became rector designate for Stationsville Presbyterian Church which then replaced Klinghoffers' former building next door as part of a larger church reorganization which also involved merging several local Protestant churches into one entity... On October 14th 1934 Wm Egan published an article aboutshorewoodandtheLaCrosseMallinPost under the title ""The Shoreside Mall"" which mentioned that they were looking for new tenants because they were struggling financially... After World War II ended; business improved somewhat but remained weak due mainly to lack of available customers outside WI & IL...
