In the early 1800s, the town of Sun Prairie was a thriving community with a population of around 350 residents. The town was founded in 1836 by John F. Barrett and his wife, Catherine. The Barrett family had moving company, and they needed to store their goods in two different locations at different times so that they could move them between the two locations regularly. They decided on a location on the north side of town near where Wrigley's first factory now stands. The townspeople were so successful that they decided to start their own business: a grocery store. In 1851, the city of Milwaukee annexed Sun Prairie and many of its citizens moved to Milwaukee while some stayed behind and started another small village called Sun Prairie again (this time with over 800 residents). At some point during this time, it was realized that there wasn't enough room for all these people in Sun Prairie so the city sold most of what remained of the village to John F. Barrett Jr. This left one building which still remains standing today - the original grocery store built by Barrett & Co.. Barrett Sr., who had died in 1850, is buried in nearby Wischertown Cemetery next to his son John F. Barrett Jr.. Today, John F.
