Superior, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Marquette County. The population was 12,811 at the 2010 census, making it the second most populous town in Marquette County after Oshkosh. The name "Superior" first appears on maps in 1836 as part of the migration of Germans to what is now Marquette County. In 1838, General John Custer's Seventh Cavalry Indiana Expedition passed through Superior while on their way to Fort Dearborn in Michigan; they were met by General Solomon Northrup's brigade from Canada who gave them a dinner and invited them to stay for the night. This event is mentioned in histories such as "Custer's Last Stand" by Harry Leon Sullivan and "The Battle of Bear Pass: A History of that Campaign" by David Hackett Fischer. In 1851, United States Senator James Kossuth used Superior as his campaign headquarters during his run for President against Zachary Taylor. In 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant fought his last battle at Belle Vue Station near Superior before being evacuated to Cairo, Illinois due to Confederate sympathies there. In 1928, Edwin Hubble discovered Ptolemy's Geography at Mount Wilson Observatory using a 16-inch aperture telescope which made it possible for him to measure distances much greater than what could be seen with an unaided eye or with traditional telescopes like those used by European observers during this time period. A post office was established at Superior in 1855, and mail was sent from Quincy to Superior twice a week until 1862 when it became an express agency with letters delivered instead of being stored in wagons on the way to Milwaukee In 1875, two men named Noyes acquired 640 acres (248 ha) of land east of present-day Superior along with another man named Dawson to build a farm called Dawson Hills which would become one of the most important agricultural properties in the area. This purchase allowed them to control all access to this valuable farmland for years after By 1905 there were over 1,500 residents living in Superior township with many businesses built around this time including: a lumberyard opened by Wm Gilderwald; an insurance company founded by John Prentice; several stores operated by Jno Biddle; a hotel built by George Eastman; and an opera house built by Charles Fenton which closed shortly before its opening date Later that year Mrs Clara Fenton donated her home on Forest Drive (now HWY 10) for use as a schoolhouse where three generations of women taught children between 1865-1965

As time passed they established themselves along sections of the river that led away from natural resources such as fish or timber. In 1836, when Wisconsin became a state, Superior became its seat and began trading with other states through its post office. In 1855, John Cushman built a sawmill on the west side of the river for local use only; it still stands today. In 1886 Superior Agricultural College was organized with land donated by prominent farmers around town to provide education for their children. Today this college offers undergraduate degrees in agriculture and agronomy as well as graduate degrees in animal science and crop science
In 1852, the first school in Superior was established. In 1916, Superior became a city and added an annex to the east side of town. The population of Superior grew rapidly and by 1930 it had reached over 100,000 people. In 1938, the city annexed the adjacent towns of Birch Run and Hudson Bay. This prompted a large expansion in the City's limits which continues to this day.
