The first permanent European settlement in what is now Wausau, Wisconsin was a French fur trader named Pierre Laclouze in 1781. The town was founded on the east bank of the Little River, about three miles from present-day Council Bluffs. The first post office was established in 1785. In 1812, the town became part of the United States and it was renamed Dodge City by U.S. President James K. Polk after American Senator George A. Dodge. The city declined during the Mexican–American War (1846–48), due to its location on important military routes, but recovered following the war's end and experienced rapid growth during the years leading up to World War II. During World War II, Dodge City became one of several U.S.-occupied cities in Mexico that were liberated by General Douglas MacArthur's forces on September 20, 1944; Wausau continued to be an American territory until it reverted back to Mexican control on October 15th of that year
