Wisconsin Rapids is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Cook County. The population was 26,261 at the 2010 census, making it the eighth-largest city in Wisconsin and one of its most populous metropolitan areas. It is also home to State University of New York–Rochester (SUNY) and Purdue University–West Lafayette. The first binoculars were built by local farmers in 1876. The first modern binoculars were invented by Drury Lighthouse Keeper George Washington Gale in 1878. In 1886, John Fritchey began selling what are now called "tourist binoculars." By 1907, several companies had developed similar instruments for sale to tourists throughout the Midwest and South, including J&R Optical Company on Presque Isle Drive in Racine, which became an official supplier to Chicago's Meade Museum of Natural History in 1913. In 1923, American businessman Harry Weitzman donated 3 million rounds of ammunition to be used as prizes at a World War I military parade; these were later known as "Wright Binocularity Awards". At that time,binoculars were not considered scientific equipment but rather entertainment items for civilians or schoolchildren. In 1935, amateur astronomer Art Arvidson constructed one of the world's first Dobsonian telescopes from metal tubes long enough to allow telescopic viewing using binoculars; this telescope was located on Mount Arvidson near Madison Heights in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. On July 1st 1906 a group of 7 men set out from Racine with two primitive small telescopes purchased from Capt Elisha Cooke Jr., proprietor of Cooke’s Store on Exchange Street corner Main Street (now First Avenue). They made their way through open country southward along Waukesha River until they reached an elevation where they stopped for dinner that night at a cabin owned by Mr Morse & Mrs Morse located about three miles east of present-day Racine on Beaver Creek Road now part of US Highway 762 just north of milepost 9 on Highway 151A (now US Highway 453). After dinner they reconvened and continued their journey about 2½ miles southeastward before arriving at another cabin occupied by Mrs Morse & her son Walter who showed them his telescope consisting only six 10×50 objective lenses with focal lengths limited to 8 feet!! This is generally accepted as being one source for the early developmentof high power optics such as those employedin space exploration!

Wisconsin Rapids is a town in theU.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the Fox River. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–Eau Claire metropolitan area. The first settler in what became Wisconsin Rapids was Nicholas Swartz in 1836. In 1854, John Dickey and his brother-in-law James Tritsch bought 160 acres (67 hectares) of land here for $4 per acre from Nicholas Swartz, who had died two years earlier. The brothers soon began to build their home: Dickey erected a log cabin on a bluff overlooking the river and named it "Dickey's Bluff". Tritsch built a sawmill and store on Big Creek just across from the new cabin, which he called "Tritsch's Mill". In 1855, Adam Cushing arrived with his family from Vermont and set up shop nearby at Cushing's Store and Campground. He organized a band of some 50 men to help him clear land for farming; he also started building cabins as summer homes for himself and his family. By 1860, about 100 people lived in Wisconsin Rapids proper; by 1870, that number had increased to 400+. In 1862, Daniel Webster came to town as part of an effort by President Abraham Lincoln to round upTAGs (the alien refugees entering America through Canada) before they could reach Minnesota or Iowa Territory; Webster helped get local farmers off their knees with loans and advice on how to raise crops – something they would need if they were ever offered citizenship by Minnesota or Iowa Territory authorities. In 1865 (just one year after Webster's visit), lumberman Hiram Morse arrived with his wagon train carrying logs downriver from Superior County; he erecting a millstreamer next door along the way made this quite an event – one that helped establishWisconsin Rapids as an important lumber center well into the 20th century! In 1866, John Fenton established himself as a grocery storekeeper hereabouts; within 5 years he'd added another business – Fenton Bros., dry goods merchants – to what would become one ofWI’s most successful small businesses! By 1880,Fenton’s store carried over 1,,000 items! Today you can still find remnants of those early days including pioneer fencing around many streets in town today – portions which date back more than 150 years ago when this community thrived off its rough water resources! Accordingly - due largely to these factors - nearly everyone who lived here during those early days either went onto make their mark or simply got busy doing something else very important right there on Main Street...almost all gone now save for maybe 4 or 5 ‘grandma’ style houses still standing today on blocks bounded by State Road #2 & 3A...and that toomostly occupied by retirees enjoying their peaceful retirement communities while locals continue Mostly Business As Usual.........almost forgot about OUR KIDS PLAYING IN THE RIVER BELOW ALL OF THIS WOODEN ACTION AND MAGNIFICENCE !!!!!

Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 7,191 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Wisconsin Rapids was Capt John Haines in 1837. He and his family built a cabin on the current site of the town in 1840. The village formed after that when settlers from all over came to look for land to farm and build their homes near the new watercourse they had helped create. A post office called Stateville opened in 1845, but it closed two years later because of lack of patronage. In 1861, residents voted to form a township under one trusteeship with three voting members per household and one trustee serving as mayor and vice-mayor. That same year, saw the start of construction on what would become Water Tower Place (later known as State Avenue). This large brick building still stands today as an important commercial center for early Wisconsin Rapids with its grocery store, bakery, mercantile business, hotel rooming house and several other businesses until it was demolished in the late 1960s due toueldering issues. The first post office in what would become Wisconsin Rapids opened on October 20th 1846 with Wisconson as its name There were only four local post offices open at that time so it's likely that this one was also named after then-Governor James Kapp who had recently moved from Racine to take up his position here
Wisconsin Rapids was founded in 1854 by General John C. Fremont and his wife, Ann. The town's first store was built on the bluff overlooking the river. The town became a mining community during the American Civil War, when wagons carrying gold and silver ore passed through the town to be unloaded at nearby mines. The mine owner also supplied food for troops on the battlefield. In 1897, Wisconsin Rapids became part of the city of Milwaukee and retains its historical role as a small town governed by aldermen who voted on ordinances.
