Wisconsin Rapids is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the seat of Racine County. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Fox River near Green Bay and is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Wisconsin Rapids" may be derived from various sources including "Wadsworth", an early settler; and "Rapid", meaning fast or flowing stream or river in French, Dutch, and other languages. The area now known as Wisconsin Rapids was first settled by Swedish immigrants in 1834. In 1841, it was platted as a town and named for Captain John Greenough, who had surveyed the area for the United States government in 1835-36. The pioneer families that founded Wisconsin Rapids were those of Lars Olson and his wife Margrethe (née Lundgren), Ole Hanson (father of Drury Hanson), Anders Olsen (brother of Rasmus Olsen), Johan Sverdrup (son of Johannes Sverdrup), Christen Pedersen (brother-in-law to Peder Christensen), Michael Nielsen, Peter Jensen, Hans Andersen and others. By 1860, most of present day Wisconsin Rapids had been developed with several stores and homes being built along the banks of the rapids which at that time ran about 3 miles wide between Falls Creek on one side and Kinnickinnic Creek on the other. In May 1861, during American Civil War Confederate forces burned all but one store in downtown Wisconsin Rapids before retreating northward across Kinnickinnic Creek towards Fortifications 1 & 2 on Racine Peninsula where they abandoned their supplies and equipment prior to surrendering on September 12th following a three day siege which resulted in almost total destruction within what is now known as Downtown WIraprsburg The original community charter granted to Wisconsin Rapids by incorporation dated November 17th1861 stated that: “No man shall ever be compelled to bear arms against any person or property within this limits; but every male inhabitant over 21 years old shall be allowed two firearms per week” This restriction was lifted after passage by both houses of Congress of an act entitled “An act to establish peace throughout our land” on July 23rd1865 which repealed all previous gun laws passed pursuant thereto including said regulation limiting arms ownership among adults over 21 years old On December 10th1866 local citizens commemorated America's birthday by repairing Liberty Pole located near contemporary State Street Bridge surrounded at its base by trees newly planted therein for this purpose following similar repairs made earlier that year/year subsequent thereto also associated with National event celebrated annually thereon called Christmas Parade
