Gillette, Wyoming is home to some of the most well-known firearms manufacturers in the world. But before there were firearms manufacturing plants in Gillette, there were gun stores that peddled weapons and ammunition to farmers and ranchers. In 1892, a store called The Arsenal was opened by Major William H. Gillette and his son, Major Harry Gillette. The store was located on the lower floor of what is now the Allendale Shopping Center. At first, The Arsenal sold only rifles and shotguns; however, over time they began to sell handguns as well. By 1903, The Arsenal had become one of the largest gun stores in Wyoming. In 1907, major General Lewis Biddle bought The Arsenal from Mr. Gilbert for $2 million dollars. Biddle renamed it the United States Armory Corporation (USAC). USAC became one of the largest firearms manufacturers in America with subsidiaries in Michigan and Illinois. In 1912, USAC produced its first handgun – an 8mm Remington pistol – at their new plant in Wilmette, Illinois. From 1913-1915, USAC won several awards for excellence in pistols production including being named “the best armament company” by Winchester Ammunition Company (Winchester) during their annual survey of American armaments companies! In 1933/34 when Franklin D Roosevelt became President of America, he announced plans to regulate firearm ownership and sales which included a ban on magazines carrying more than ten rounds per magazine while also imposing taxes on firearms manufacturer profits above $200 per year! This led to a decline in business at United States Armory Corporation as many Americans chose not to buy guns anymore due to these regulations! However, USAC still managed to produce some excellent handguns such as their iconic 9mm Luger pistols! When World War II started hostilities broke out between America and Nazi Germany; however, no American arms manufacturer wanted active participation because they knew that any military assistance would lead to economic destruction for themselves! Hence all American arms manufacturers except Colt Incorporated turned away from war production until very late into 1941 when finally they decided it was too risky not participate……..and then did nothing until 1945 when Japan surrendered!!!!!! The mining boom of the 1890s caused much growth in the town; however, when gold was discovered nearby in 1901, Gilmore quickly lost its importance as an access point to the mineral wealth of Bridger-Teton National Park. As development slowed around World War I, Gilmore saw only sporadic use until it became an incorporated community again during Prohibition period due to tight regulations against liquor sales at that time. In 1933, following repeal of prohibition nationwide, Gilmore reverted back to its pre-Prohibition status as an unincorporated community once again under municipal jurisdiction. During World War II many Gillette residents served their country both at home and abroad through military service or work related projects; some have even been mentioned as earning distinction such as being awarded the Medal of Honor for actions fought while stationed outside of North America After World War II ended there was steady growth throughout the 1950s until disco hit Gillette hard with overnight changes which had little impact on most people's daily lives aside from making more money than they had ever made before However despite all this change things are slowly but surely returning back to how they were before - mainly because no one wants to leave because there's nothing else out there like it!
