Rock Springs, Wyoming is located in the U.S. state of Wyoming and is the county seat of Sheridan County. The population of Rock Springs was 9,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Casper, Wyo. Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Rock Springs were Arapaho and Shoshoni who named it after a springs they found thereabouts called "Natrona." The Arapaho built their villages on high bluffs overlooking the spring and hunted game nearby. About 1876, Jens Jensen, an early settler in Sheridan County arrived from Minnesota with his family and began trading goods with the Arapaho and other Native Americans near present-day Rocksprings Station. By 1880, all but one family had left for various reasons including droughts and new gold discoveries in Colorado's Rocky Mountains. In 1881 Dutch Emmons opened a post office at Rockspring Station which became the county seat when Sheridan County was created from Custer County on January 1st that year under territorial laws organized by President Washington Carleton as part of his Northwest Territory gains following the Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1905, James Hutton purchased land south of present day Rockspring Station for $10 per acre (the sale took place just after Hutton had become president of Denver & Northern Railroad). He started building a flour mill on his property which soon became known as "Hutton's Mill". In 1911 he donated land extending eastward from his mill site to future sites for three small towns - Albion (now Rock Springs), Purdy (now Butte) and Park City - all named after him: Huttonville, Hutton Township, Purdy Township. The town sites were platted in 1912 by Sidney Sacks who also founded Castle Rock Dam along Glen Canyon River north of Park City which served as both primary water source for these towns while also providing power to Albion Mill until 1956 when dam construction replaced mill powerage; Today Castlerock Dam remains a significant tourist destination near Park City proper while Glen Canyon River access downstream via Fishing Lake has been closed off to navigation since 1980 due to high levels of illegal fishing activity around its basecamp vicinity Guadalupe Island within its tidal zone; The first schools in what is now Rock Springs were two log cabin schools operated by Mr. White about 1876/77 using mostly local students from surrounding communities such as Albion, Butte and even Purdy; later schools were brick buildings erected by Fenton Brothers livery stable owner John Fenton between 1907-1915 which housed 12 classrooms plus administrative offices.; These brick school buildings are still standing today across from Albion High School on North Main Street next door to Tower Hardware Store where former Mayor Donny Moench currently resides
