Rock Springs is the seat of Sheridan County, Wyoming. The small community was founded in 1879 by Mormon pioneers as a trading post on the Snake River. It became an important military and trade center during the American Civil War, and then saw rapid growth during the 19th century as a result of its natural resources. In 1907, Rock Springs School District was created from part of Sheridan County, and in 1957 it merged with Laramie School District to form Sheridan County Schools. In 1969, Rock Springs Population Center opened as a national resource center for population research. Today, it serves as a cultural attraction and educational facility for students from throughout Sheridan County. The community was platted in 1875 by local residents who named it after a spring that they found near their farmstead. The first post office was established in 1880, and the name was changed to Rock Springs in 1907 due to its pronunciation as "rkksprs". Rock Springs is located at (41.827283, -101.609609). According to the 2010 census, Rock Springs has a total area of , of which is land and is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 2,063 people, 714 households, and 584 families residing in the town. The population density was 33 people per square mile (13/km²). There were 777 housing units at an average density of 17 per square mile (6/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 99% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; and 1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1%of all residents
