The town took its name from nearby Springdale, Colorado, where General George Armstrong Custer was born in 1815. The new name stuck and Rock Springs became one of the most popular towns in Sheridan County for a variety of reasons: its easy access to water supplies, its close proximity to other towns and businesses, and its location within easy reach of major highways such as I-25 and US-6. Rock Springs is a small town in Logan County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 692 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sheridan, Wyo., Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Rock Springs were the Mandan and Hidatsa peoples in 1819. The area now includes parts of Logan and Sheridan counties, as well as Carbon County in Kansas. In 1863, Major John J. Cooke founded the post office here and named it after his home state of Texas, Rock Springs being one of several places Cooke named for various states or countries he had visited while commanding Ulysses S. Grant’s forces during the American Civil War. In 1868–69, Indian Wars fought near this location led to increased settlement around Coal Creek River by Mormons heading from Nauvoo, Illinois due to religious persecution there by Missourians under General Joseph Smith (1804-1844). Mormon pioneers arrived on horseback from what is now Weber County on November 1, 1868; they were soon joined by Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians who had been living near Logan Valley since before white men had set foot in that region. Rock Springs was platted in 1865 by James Ewing with land acquired from David Dudley Field along Coal Creek south of present-day Rocky Spring Village site. By 1870 about 200 people lived hereabouts; many worked for pioneer leader Olin Meeker as construction crews working on trails cutting through ski hills now located just inside town limits east of Interstate 80/U.S.-Route 66 junction east of Park Avenue NE: these early residents quarryed
